Introduction to Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (CAPVA)

A parent may tell you they are frightened of their own child. They may describe walking on eggshells at home, changing their behaviour to avoid an outburst, hiding injuries or worrying about what might happen next.

But they may also quickly minimise what is happening.

They may feel ashamed, fear being blamed for their child’s behaviour or worry that asking for help could lead to judgement of them as a parent — or consequences for their child.

At the same time, the child or young person may have their own experiences of trauma, adversity, unmet need or difficulty regulating overwhelming emotions.

CAPVA is complex. Responding safely means holding the needs, experiences and safety of the whole family in mind.

About this course

This introductory self-paced course explores Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (CAPVA), helping you understand what it is, how it may present and how it can affect parents, carers, children, siblings and wider family relationships.

You’ll explore patterns and indicators of harmful behaviour, factors that may influence CAPVA and the role that trauma and emotional regulation can play.

The course considers how professionals can respond without blame or judgement, while remaining clear that understanding behaviour does not mean excusing harm.

You’ll also explore safeguarding, safety and the importance of recognising when a family may need additional or specialist support.

This course covers sensitive topics relating to violence and abuse within families. Support information is provided at the beginning of the programme.
